The Franche-Comté: Lush countryside interspersed with areas of dense forest; the mountains of the Jura and southern Vosges are ideal for summer and winter sports; lakes and rivers for cruising and recreation; and a rich history with many heritage towns and cultural sites. The region is named after the Franche Comté de Bourgogne (Free County of Burgundy), definitively separated from the region of Burgundy proper in the fifteenth century but reunited as the new region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in 2016, when it merged with the historic Duchy of Burgundy.
