Region: Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes Prefecture: Saint-Étienne Loire is a department in the east-central part of France occupying the River Loire's upper reaches, which crosses the department from south to north. NB This is not the classic Loire Valley with its chateaux, but wilder, more isolated stretches of the upper river. Parts of the department belong to the Parc naturel régional Livradois-Forez. The departement includes the town of Roanne, home to the Troisgros Brothers' restaurant and the Cote Roannaise wines - reds made from Gamay grapes from the solid granite of the Monts de la Madeleine.
