NB This is not the classic Loire Valley with its chateaux, but wilder, more isolated stretches of the upper river. Parts of the department belong to the Parc naturel régional Livradois-Forez. The departement includes the town of Roanne, home to the Troisgros Brothers' restaurant and the Cote Roannaise wines - reds made from Gamay grapes from the solid granite of the Monts de la Madeleine.
