There is a great opportunity to get to know the wines of the northern Rhône (Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint Joseph, Crozes Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas, St Peray et Brézème) better at the Tain Wine Fair (Salon des Vins de Tain l’Hermitage) 23 – 25 February 2024 in the Espace Rochegude in Tain (26 Drôme, ARA) where 85 winemakers will be offering their wines for a tasting – and there is a “espace gastronomique” to discover local foods to accompany those wines.
The wines of the northern Rhône valley (Côtes du Rhône Septentrionales = ” of the north“) tend to be less well-known compared to the more ubiquitous and popular southern Rhône (Côtes du Rhône méridional). But for the cognoscenti the wines of the northern Rhône have some rel gems including one of the finest white wines of the region at Condrieu, and the best example of red Syrah e.g. in the Côte Rotie near Valence.

There is also a wine market at Ampuis (Marché aux Vins d’Ampuis) (69 Rhône, ARA) in January – see Marché aux Vins d’Ampuis
Ampuis is about 60km north of Tain up the A7 autoroute and is particularly associated with Côte Rôtie wines – the red northern Rhône wine made from Syrah and Viognier.
