Cassis is most well-known as the blackcurrant liqueur from Burgundy, but there is also a Provence wine appellation AOC Cassis which produces white, rosé and red wines on the mediterranean coast east of Marseille– Cassis wine!
Cassis (13 Bouches-du-Rhone, Provence PACA) has a long and distinguished history as the Romans and Greeks grew vines around Marseille from ancient times. The limestone “Calanques” (small fjord inlets) and cliffs make for a good but difficult terrain for vines.
Protected from cold northerly winds by the Montagne Sainte-Victoire and Massif de la Sainte-Baume to the north and the Saint-Cyr hills to the west, the vines enjoy sheltered and warm growing conditions.
In May the town holds a wine festival Cassis fête son vin 14 – 16 June 2024
In late September each year the village holds its harvest wine festival – Les Vendanges étoilées (harvest by starlight)
There are only about a dozen or so small producers in the Cassis appellation, but also within reach are the vineyards of Bandol, where rich heavy reds are produced from the Mourvedre grapes – e.g see the vineyards of Bunan – reached by a 30 minute drive along the coast – although ignoring the more industrial centre of La Ciotat
