The EU has approved France’s decision to ban short-haul flights within France – on routes where there are several daily direct trains available for the same journey, and the journey time by train is less than 2½ hours! The change rules out air trips between Paris and regional hubs such as Nantes, Lyon and Bordeaux.

This is a contribution to lowering the carbon footprint of internal travel, and made easier by France’s impressive high-speed rail system (TGV). The added benefit for travellers is that the train is usually city centre to city centre, saving time, money and carbon!

… train services on the same route must be frequent, timely and well-connected enough to meet the needs of passengers who would otherwise travel by air – and able to absorb the increase in passenger numbers

Hence some flights to minor French Airports will still be allowed

Main routes affected:

  • Paris Orly to Lyon
  • Paris Orly to Bordeaux
  • Paris Orly to Nantes
