Le Jour de la Nuit (Day of the Night) is a campaign to raise awareness of light pollution, protection of biodiversity and night starry sky in France. In 2013 the event is on the night of 12 October 2024
With over 500 events across France, there is the opportunity to witness the magnificence of the night sky without the distraction and reflection of man-made light sources from towns and villages, airports and offices.
You can take guided walking tours to see the hopefully starry sky and to understand the impact of light pollution on biodiversity.
Many municipalities are switching off public floodlighting for 2 hours as part of the scheme. The volume of artificial lighting schemes has increased by over 30% in France in the last 10 years.
I can certainly remember staying in a rural gite deep in the Tarn valley about 20 years ago with a student of Astronomy who was amazed at how black the night was and how many stars he could see with the naked eye compared to his night sky view at home in Berkshire!
Take a torch with you!
