pont chblan delmas, bordeaux
Pont Chaban Delmas

A new bridge opened in 2013 in Bordeaux (33 Gironde, Nouvelle Aquitaine) – The Pont Chaban Delmas is a lifting bridge – i.e. the central section lifts to allow shipping to pass underneath (un pont levant)

With a capacity of 43,000 vehicles a day this should ease traffic on the existing Pont d’Aquitaine (E5/A630) which is part of the motorway ring around the city and which is a route much used by traffic heading for Bayonne, Biarritz and Spain.

The bridge itself is unlikely to be of direct use for through journeys being sited a bit up-river (towards the City)from the existing Pont d’Aquitaine, but should siphon off traffic heading for the city centre from the North (e.g from autoroute A10), thereby reducing traffic volume on the old bridge.

Jacques Chaban Delmas was Prime Minister of France under President Georges Pompidou from 1969 to 1972. In addition, for almost half a century, he was Mayor of Bordeaux.
