Building work at Le Mont St Michel (50 Manche, Normandie) has been completed and President Francois Hollande on 31 October 2015 opened a bridge which restores the Abbey’s island status after 10 years of construction.
This replaces the causeway that used to link the abbey to the mainland and the bridge allows water to move freely and helps remove the silt in the bay, so that the UNESCO recognised monument becomes an island at high tide! Previously this only occured at exceptional spring tides – now twice daily!
Visitors can now use a car park on the mainland and travel to the Mont Saint Michel on foot or by a bus shuttle service.
Stay on the Mont St Michel
The Hotel Les Terrasses Poulard is on the Grand Rue on the island with great views over the Mont and the sea . There is also an adjacent Restaurant.
