Marseille (13 Bouches-du-Rhone, Provence) becomes the European Capital of Culture for 2013 – an accolade which it is hoped (and planned) to redevelop the city as a more cosmopolitan destination. The Vieux Port is being pedestrianised, a new stadium is being built and hundreds of cultural and artistic events will take place throughout the Provence region: in Aix-en-Provence, Arles, Aubagne, Gardanne, Istres, La Ciotat, Martigues, Salon de Provence and, of course, Marseille.
On earlier visits to Marseille, a quick visit to the Vieux Port was soon followed by a quick exit to explore the delights of southern Provence – Aix-en-Provence, Les Baux or Avignon,
2013 promises to make Marseille a “must” and transform what has previously been a rather dour and industrial city to one which can optimise its position on the Mediterranean coast in the superb Provençal climate.
