Region: Centre-Val de Loire Prefecture: Bourges Named after the Cher River, the departement was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution in 1790. Most of it was created, along with the adjacent department of Indre from the former province of Berry. The southeastern corner of the department, however, was part of the Duchy of Bourbon.
