Although there are basic autoroute “aires” every 10/15 kilometres (except where an autoroute goes close to a major town or city) these usually only have parking and picnic areas, basic toilet facilities and sometimes a payphone. Larger “aires” are less frequent but will include café/restaurant/shop plus a filling station – sometimes a hotel, tourist office, local produce etc. Toilets are usually also available immediately after leaving a Péage – a toll booth.
