FROM VERMEER TO VAN GOGH
THE DUTCH MASTERS
From 16 February 2024 to 5 January 2025
In what could be a spooky and threatening environment made of thick reinforced concrete Culturespaces has transformed old submarine base to cleverly project some great art onto the walls at a size that impresses. It is very dark, with the water of the pens adding to the experience of vibrant colours and stunning art of Ven Gogh, Vermeer and Mondrian.
This digital exhibition presents the genius of the painters of the North through a complete immersion in authentic paintings that are faithful representations of nature and its themes. The monumental basins are the perfect setting for a daydream along the Flemish canals. You will explore the reality of daily life, following in the footsteps of the great masters who represented the ordinary in an extraordinary way.
Painting light and atmosphere is the exhibition’s main theme. Direct or subdued, cold or warm, the light reveals the facades and the privacy of family homes. You will set sail and berth your boats in the cities and stroll around in Vermeer’s world, in which the inhabitants invite us to step into the canvas. Much like a filmmaker, Vermeer chose what to include inside the frame and created a world suspended in time. His canvases are like synopses that open the doors to an almost Hitchcockian mystery, in which you become a part of the mise en scèn

Since 2018, Culturespaces has implemented a major project to enhance and develop the four basins in the submarine base, entrusted to it by the City of Bordeaux. In addition to restoration work and the restoration of the site (floors, tanks, foundations, electricity, soundproofing, etc.), and the creation of technical areas (offices, production room, servers, etc.), Culturespaces has decided to develop the site in order to improve the visitors’ experience.
In front of the entry to the base, an annex building with a surface area of 340 m2 will house a reception area, a ticket office, and a shop. The basin areas will be concealed by enormous 15-metre-hightarpaulins, which will also be used as projection surfaces.
Originally, the basins only had one gangway. It was renovated and two additional gangways were added in order to facilitate access, increase the itinerary floor space for visitors, and increase the number of viewpoints [ htps://www.bassins-lumieres.com ]
