Country village Auberge in Chassignoles (43 Haut-Loire, ARA)south of Clermont-Ferrand
Called in for Sunday lunch – their first of the season. The auberge was providing aperitifs for local notables and the army celebrating Armistice Day (on 8 May), hence the rather bizzare table decorations and the crowd in the square outside the auberge.
Great lunch
- charcuterie – paté, mousse and brawn (fromage de tête)- home made
- fish soup with garlic mayonnaise
- roast chicken with baby potatoes and jerusalem artichokes!
- cheese platter (Fourme d’Ambert, St Nectaire and Berkswell!
- Pot au chocolat with cream
With superb bread, a glass of wine (I was driving) and 2 cups of decent coffee €28.00! (about £23.50)(2014)
The Auberge sits in the main square of Chassignolles directly opposite a 12th century church and next to the remains of a 13th Century feudal castle. At 950 metres, the village has spectacular views of open pastures and dense forests stretching, mile after mile, to the volcanic peaks of the Auvergne and Mont Dore. With its pure mountain air and languid pace, this tranquil village has long been a place for visitors to rest and recuperate.
