{"id":9268,"date":"2014-03-11T17:10:04","date_gmt":"2014-03-11T17:10:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stayonafrenchvineyard.com\/?p=268"},"modified":"2014-03-11T17:10:04","modified_gmt":"2014-03-11T17:10:04","slug":"madiran-south-west","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/madiran-south-west\/","title":{"rendered":"Madiran, South West wine village"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In deepest <strong>Gascony<\/strong> and in the foothills of the Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es lies the idyllic landscape of <strong>Madiran<\/strong>, home to the original <strong>Malbec<\/strong> wines of the name.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tourisme-vicbilh.fr\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-270\" src=\"http:\/\/frenchduck.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/\/madiran_poster.gif\" alt=\"madiran_poster\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a>This is rural France &#8211; no big towns or major autoroutes &#8211; rolling hills and fields, small villages and wine-making in the land of the Three Musketeers. The area is known as the &#8220;Old Country&#8221; <em>Vic Bilh <\/em>in Gascon, with an ancient vineyard of red wines of &#8220;<strong>Madiran<\/strong>&#8221; and white wines of <strong>&#8220;Pacherenc du Vic Bilh&#8221;<\/strong> and local country wines &#8211; <strong>Vin de Pays des C\u00f4tes de Gascogne.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Originally the local Madiran wines were robust and tannic &#8211; excellent foils for the rich duck and goose which are the area&#8217;s principal dishes. Modern styles have become more fruit-driven and can be wondrously smooth. The whites range from dry to lush dessert wines. Good wines are made by the local <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.plaimont.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plaimont <\/a><\/strong>co-operative (at St Mont), but the stars of the area are small craft winemakers, such as the Laplace family at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.famillelaplace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chateau d&#8217;Aydie <\/strong>(at Viella)<\/a>, Alain Brumont at <strong>Chateau Bouscass\u00e9<\/strong> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brumont.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chateau Montus <\/strong><\/a>(at Maumusson Laguian) Didier Barr\u00e9 at<a href=\"http:\/\/www.domaine-berthoumieu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Domaine Berthoumieu<\/strong><\/a> Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Atlantiques, Aquitaine) about 50km south-west or <strong>Lourdes <\/strong>(65 Hautes-Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es, Midi-Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es) about 60km south or <strong>Toulouse<\/strong> ( 31 Haut-Garonne, Midi-Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es) &#8211; about 150km east<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.booking.com\/city\/fr\/madiran.html?aid=372824;label=fduk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Other accommodation around Madiran<\/a> includes B&amp;Bs, self-catering apartments\/villas &#8211; but beware this is a seriously rural area with few large towns or public
