{"id":7368,"date":"2013-02-04T09:34:56","date_gmt":"2013-02-04T09:34:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/?p=7368"},"modified":"2025-02-17T18:29:16","modified_gmt":"2025-02-17T18:29:16","slug":"portsmouth-le-havre-ferries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/portsmouth-le-havre-ferries\/","title":{"rendered":"Le Havre, Normandy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/leHavre.png\" alt=\"Malraux Museum in le Havre\" class=\"wp-image-7373\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Malraux Museum in le Havre by Perret<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">There looks to be some healthy competition on the western cross-channel crossing from Portsmouth or Newhaven when&nbsp;<strong><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Brittany Ferries to France\" href=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/link\/brittany-ferries\/brittany-ferries-to-france\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Brittany Ferries<\/a> and <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"DFDS Dieppe\" href=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/link\/dfds\/dfds-dieppe\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">DFDS Ferries<\/a><\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/impgb.tradedoubler.com\/imp?type(inv)g(17700268)a(1194892)\" alt=\"\">&nbsp;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/become.successfultogether.co.uk\/view.asp?ref=553752&amp;site=6792&amp;type=text&amp;tnb=10\" alt=\"\">operate. Since P&amp;O Ferries pulled out of this route a few years ago, competition has been lacking &#8211; with the only other alternatives being the short-sea crossing from Dover &#8211; <strong>Calais<\/strong> or Brittany Ferries&#8217; longer crossings to <strong>Caen<\/strong> or <strong>St Malo<\/strong> or <strong>Roscoff<\/strong> further west.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"DFDS Dieppe\" href=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/link\/dfds\/dfds-dieppe\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">DFDS <\/a>now operate the <strong>Newhaven<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>Dieppe<\/strong> route (4 hours)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the obvious advantages for those living in the South or SouthWest of England, this is also an attractive route for travellers to or from the Midlands and North, as it avoids London and the M25, whilst the A43 and A34 south from the M1 at <strong>Northampton<\/strong> via <strong>Oxford<\/strong> is, despite not being a motorway, dual carriageway most of its length and generally less busy &#8211; although the <strong>Oxford<\/strong> By-Pass (A34) can cause a few delays on rush hour. The other alternative is the M42\/M40 from <strong>Leicester<\/strong> to <strong>Oxford<\/strong>, but this can get quite busy around <strong>Birmingham<\/strong>! On the French side, <strong>Le Havre<\/strong> is about 2 hours from Paris on the A13 &#8211; or if you are heading to the southwest you can avoid <strong>Paris<\/strong> altogether!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a few years since I have been in <strong>Le Havre,<\/strong> and I never particularly liked the often &#8220;brutalist&#8221; post-war architecture &#8211; but maybe I am wrong &#8211; as&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/unesco.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/unesco.jpg\" alt=\"unesco logo\" class=\"wp-image-4756\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In July 2005,<strong> UNESCO<\/strong> added the <strong>Le Havre<\/strong> city centre, rebuilt by <b>Auguste Perret<\/b>, to its <b>World Heritage List<\/b>. Perret was a major 20th century architect and a &#8220;poet in concrete&#8221; who was both traditionalist and innovative in his approach. He successfully rose to the challenge before him, seeking inspiration in architectural tradition and drawing on his own strong desire for modernisation to reinvent a unique, open city centre that is harmonious and resolutely innovative across an area of 133 hectares. <b>Le Havre city centre is the first 20th century urban settlement in Europe to be added to the World Heritage List.<\/b> The Mus\u00e9e Andr\u00e9 Malraux was one of his creations and is now a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muma-lehavre.fr\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Museum of Modern Art in Le Havre.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The delights of<strong> Rouen<\/strong> are within easy reach!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"> <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Brittany Ferries to France\" href=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/link\/brittany-ferries\/brittany-ferries-to-france\/\"
