Many celebrations take place across France on Bastille Day (14 July )<\/strong><\/span>. but one of the most spectacular must be the firework display over the magical, medieval city of Carcassonne<\/strong> (11 Aude, Occitanie<\/em>). 14 July is celebrated in France as la Fete Nationale<\/em> (Bastille Day) or Le Quatorze Juillet<\/em> to mark the storming of the Bastille, starting the French Revolution on July 14, 1789<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 10.30pm at night  and best seen from the banks of the Aude river there will be a 25  minute extravanza with flames of blue, white, yellow, green red, gold and a grandiose crowning piece. More than 1200 impacts in 6 seconds over 600 metres of frontage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The imposing fortifications of the citadel of Carcassonne occupy a rocky outcrop overlooking the course of the River Aude. At the foot of their walls stretches the lower town, a bastide founded in 1248 by Louis IX.<\/em>
Carcassonne has been a settlement since the 6th century BC and was a Roman town, fortified during the later imperial period, before becoming a medieval citadel. It has examples of 1,000 years of military architecture and 2,600 years of history. A rich and varied tour is available and includes many areas not otherwise visited: ramparts, hoardings, projection room, lapidary museum.
