The belfries and town hall spires (e.g. Calais) make significant statements as to each town\u2019s importance and cultural ambitions, rising as they do above the otherwiese rather featureless landscape.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37957\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37957\" style=\"width: 471px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cote-dopale.com\/tourisme\/beffroi-de-bergues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37957\" src=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/berguesbelfry-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Belfry\" width=\"471\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/berguesbelfry-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/berguesbelfry-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/berguesbelfry.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 471px) 100vw, 471px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37957\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Belfry at Bergues<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Arriving by ferry into <strong>Dunkerque<\/strong> with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/clkuk.tradedoubler.com\/click?p(40244)a(1194892)g(17700268)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DFDS<\/a><\/strong> is not one of the most exciting waypoints on the trip to sunnier parts of France \u2013 but then it lies a few miles away from the town in the midst of an industiral port area \u2013 yet has good access to the autoroute network to speed you away to your chosen destination and avoiding the town completely. The town of Dunkerque itself is too modern and industrial for my tastes \u2013 rebuilt after 1945 it was intended to be a bold architecture for the future, but to my mind it lascks \u201cwarmth\u201d and human scale.<\/p>\n<p>On a smaller scale, a few miles inland from Dunkerque lies the town of <strong>Bergues<\/strong> (62 Pas-de-Calais, <em>Hauts de France<\/em>)\u00a0The highlight here is the walled town \u2013 it is effectively a Vauban fortification, surrounded by several interlocking and dauntingly thick and high walls\u00a0with a moat, angled such that any attacker would have an to cross an easily-defended\u00a0field of fire. The scale of these fortifications ( and many others built by Vauban around the borders of France (the \u201cHexagone\u201d) is so impressive that you do not have to be a fan of military history to appreciate them.<\/p>\n<p>Within this imposing structure is a pleasant small town \u2013 with a main square and a belfy! \u2013 this feels very French\/Flemish and makes it worth a detour \u2013 a peaceful stroll\u00a0around the ramparts and the heart of the town provides a pleasant break before or after the crowded and impersonal experience that getting across the English Channel has become.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bjtags\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The main attractions of much of northern France are the impressive main squares of the principal towns \u2013 e.g. Arras, Lille and St Omer.
