Much of England&#8217;s history between 1154 and 1453 was bound up with events in the Southwest France and the Dordogne, including Henry II&#8217;s ownership and subsequent loss of <strong>Aquitaine<\/strong> and his marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine. Not to mention the English claim to <strong>Calais<\/strong> and innumerable battles on French territory over the centuries.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another thread of our history is manifested in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.routerichardcoeurdelion.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Route de Richard, Coeur du Lion<\/a>, better known as Richard the Lionheart or Richard I. Much of his reign was spent on the Crusades to the Holy Land, however the &#8220;Route&#8221; is not connected with the Crusades, but more with a less consequential tussle with Philip of France, which ultimately led to his death in the Limousin.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The route runs through pleasant and little-visited countryside in an area bounded by <strong>Angouleme<\/strong> (16 Charente, <em>Nouvelle Aquitaine)<\/em>, <strong>Limoges<\/strong> (87 Haut Vienne, <em>Nouvelle Aquitaine<\/em>) and <strong>Perigueux<\/strong> (24 Dordogne, <em>Nouvelle Aquitaine<\/em>) and focuses on 15 medieval castles most of which are open to the public, Many of them are impressive structures with rounded turrets and moats, the most impressive being <strong>Chateau de Jumilhac le Grand<\/strong> (24 Dordogne, <em>Nouvelle Aquitaine<\/em>). The most poignant is probably the <strong>Chateau de Chalus-Chabrol <\/strong>where Richard met an untimely death.<br \/>The castles on the route are:-<br \/>Chateau de Rochebrune <strong>Etagnac\u00a0<\/strong><em>Charente<\/em><br \/>Chateau de Rochechouart <strong>Rochechouart\u00a0<\/strong><em>Haute Vienne<\/em><br \/>Chateau de Brie\u00a0<b>Champagnac-la-Rivi\u00e8re<\/b>\u00a0<em>Haute Vienne<\/em><br \/>Chateau de Montbron\u00a0<strong>Dournazac\u00a0<\/strong><em>Haute Vienne<\/em><br \/>Chateau de Chalus-Chabrol\u00a0<strong>Chalus<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Haute Vienne<\/em><br \/>Chateau des Cars <strong>Les Cars<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Haute Vienne<\/em><br \/>Chateau de Lastours\u00a0<strong>Rilhac Lastours<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Haute Vienne<\/em><br \/>Chateau de Nexon <strong>Nexon\u00a0<\/strong><em>Haute Vienne<\/em><br \/><strong>Le Chalard<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Haute Vienne\u00a0<\/em><br \/>Chateau de Jumilhac\u00a0<strong>Jumilhac-le-Grand<\/strong> <em>Dordogne<\/em><br \/>Cite de <strong>Saint Yreix-le-Perche<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Haute Vienne<\/em><br \/>Chateau de Coussac\u00a0<strong>Coussac-Bonneval\u00a0<\/strong><em>Haute Vienne<\/em><br \/>Cite de Segur le Ch\u00e2teau\u00a0<strong>Segur le Ch\u00e2teau\u00a0<\/strong><em>Corr\u00e8ze\u00a0<\/em><br \/>Chateau de Pompadour\u00a0<strong>Arnac-Pompadour<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Corr\u00e8ze\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The route is well sign-posted throughout its 180 km\/112 mile length, and provides a good way of passing a few days wandering through the gentle countryside of the <strong>Limousin<\/strong>, off the main north-south traffic routes &#8211; and get some history. Regrettably, wine is not one of the highlights of the region &#8211; you need to go north, south or west of the region for decent wines. But it is a rich fruit and chestnut producing area &#8211; so your trip can be healthy and abstemious as well!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"90\" height=\"36\" class=\"wp-image-18744\" src=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/monument_preferre2.png\" alt=\"monument preferre\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The southernmost Chateau, the<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cc-payspompadour.fr\/accueil.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Chateau de Pompadour<\/a><\/strong> together with the adjacent <strong>National Horse Stud<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifce.fr\/haras-nationaux\/nos-sites\/haras-national-de-pompadour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Haras National<\/em><\/a>) has been voted as one of the top places to visit in France by the French! (France2 TV).
