The town of Orange<\/strong> (84 Vaucluse, Provence <\/em>) in the heart of the Rhone Valley hosts one of the oldest festivals of music and opera in France (les Choregies d’Orange<\/em>) Festival of Lyrical Art from 20 June – 6 August 2022 <\/strong><\/span>with the Festival at Orange<\/strong>‘s Roman Theatre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festival takes place in the classic Roman theatre, which provides a spectacular backdrop for the music of Tchaikowski, Berlioz, Mascagni, Leoncavallo and others, with a headline performance of Verdi’s la Traviata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/ins>The Chor\u00e9gies d\u2019Orange are France\u2019s oldest active festival: they date back to 1869! This venerable age has not prevented them from preserving their originality: <\/em>
through the name they bear, from the Greek \u2018choreos\u2019, harking back to the Graeco-Latin tradition; <\/em>
through the location of the summer performances, a perfectly preserved Roman theatre, that seats 8,300 and can boast its original stage wall and its outstanding acoustics; <\/em>
through the lyric and musical vocation that is theirs and that allows them to organise one of the leading French music festival, with an undisputed international reputation to boot. The first performance was given in 1869, with M\u00e9hul\u2019s opera \u2018Joseph\u2019. The Roman theatre was then dedicated to the French dramatic authors of the times, but also to the rediscovery of the great Graeco-Roman tragedies.<\/em>
From 1971 onward, when the \u2018Nouvelles Chor\u00e9gies\u2019 were founded, the Roman theatre turned entirely to modern lyric and musical works, immediately meeting huge success.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
