According to the Guardian (10 May 2016)<\/a> there will no longer be the romantic (but uncomfortable) \"couchette\"couchette<\/em> sleeper compartments on overnight long-distance trains from Paris after July 2016 – except for those from Paris<\/strong> to Brian\u00e7on<\/strong> (05 Hautes-Alpes, PACA<\/em>), Rodez<\/strong> (12 Aveyron, Occitanie<\/em>) and Latour-de-Carol<\/strong> (66, Pyrenees Orientales, (Occitanie<\/em>).<\/p>\n

High costs and competition from budget airlines are mainly to blame, but it marks the end of an era – and is only following moves elsewhere in Europe.<\/p>\n

\nFrench Railways now offer the I<\/strong>ntercit\u00e9s de Nuit <\/strong><\/em>service of Night Inter-City trains:<\/p>\n

Formerly known by the name Lun\u00e9a<\/strong>, travelling through the night on air-conditioned Intercit\u00e9s de Nuit trains operated by SNCF is a good, though not luxurious, way of reaching your destination while saving hotel costs. Compared to other European night trains, Intercit\u00e9s de Nuit<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>services are quite basic.<\/p>\n

With some routes axed in 2016, the surviving network is sparse with trains running direct from Paris to the French Riviera<\/strong>, Brian\u00e7on<\/strong> in the Alps, Toulouse<\/strong> and the Pyrenees, the Spanish border town of Irun<\/strong> and a handful of other destinations in south-west France. see Intercit\u00e9s de Nuit<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n
