Dijon<\/strong> Christmas Market (Cote-d’Or, BFC<\/em>) runs from 30 November – 24 December 2024<\/strong><\/span>
Dijon’s Christmas market at Place de la Lib\u00e9ration and at the Place Darcy offers a village of stalls\/chalets selling local products (spice bread (pain d’\u00e9pices), mustard (of course), foie gras and honey), plus colourful arts and crafts, children’s toys and mulled wine. There is also a skating rink at the Place de la R\u00e9publique and a Big Wheel (Carousel) to be enjoyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organisers claim that this year’s Dijon Christmas has been completely re-vamped with a renewed emphasis on local produce – not difficult in such an abundant region with its wines, cheeses and other gourmet offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The province was home to the Dukes of Burgundy from the early 11th until the late 15th centuries and Dijon was a place of tremendous wealth and power, one of the great European centres of art, learning and science<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city has retained varied architectural styles from many of the main periods of the past millennium, including Capetian, Gothic and Renaissance. Many still-inhabited town houses in the city’s central district date from the 18th century and earlier. Dijon architecture is distinguished by, among other things, toits bourguignons<\/i> (Burgundian polychrome roofs) made of tiles glazed in terracotta, green, yellow and black and arranged in geometric patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dijon holds an International and Gastronomic Fair every year in autumn. With over 500 exhibitors and 200,000 visitors every year, it is one of the ten most important fairs in France. Dijon is also home, every three years, to the international flower show Florissimo<\/i>. Dijon is famous for Dijon mustard which originated in 1856, when Jean Naigeon of Dijon substituted verjuice, the acidic “green” juice of not-quite-ripe grapes, for vinegar in the traditional mustard recipe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The historical center of the city has been registered since 2015 as a UNESCO<\/strong> World Heritage site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
