Then the need for cash is another consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We now find no need for <strong>Travellers Cheques<\/strong> nor significant amounts of cash before we travel,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently we have found using <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wise.prf.hn\/click\/camref:1100l9gc5\/pubref:fd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wise<\/a><\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/wise.prf.hn\/click\/camref:1100l9gc5\/pubref:fd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a>(formerly TransferWise<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/prf.hn\/click\/camref:1011l9fuf\/adref:N\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">) <\/a>the best option for our needs, both to send money abroad and for spending money with their pre-paid Mastercard &#8211; the following is an extract from their website:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>France is the most visited country in the world when looking at international arrivals. A staggering 84.5 million international visitors chose France for their travels in 2015<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you\u2019re heading there for a short break or relocating for good, you\u2019ll need to know how to get &#8211; and spend &#8211; your cash. This guide walks through the banking and currency systems so you know what to expect on your visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-currency-in-france\"><a href=\"https:\/\/transferwise.com\/gb\/blog\/money-and-banks-in-france#currency-in-france\" name=\"currency-in-france\"><\/a>Currency in France<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"120\" height=\"121\" src=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/euro120.png\" alt=\"1 euro coin\" class=\"wp-image-29544\" srcset=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/euro120.png 120w, https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/euro120-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 120px) 100vw, 120px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France is one of the eleven founding members of the Eurozone, with Euros coming into circulation as the only legal tender in 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other currencies are not widely accepted in France, so you will need to have Euros on you for your visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>1 EUR<\/td><td>One Euro is made up of 100 cents.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>EUR coins<\/td><td>Coins are available in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 cents, as well as \u20ac1 and \u20ac2.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>EUR banknotes<\/td><td>Notes which are commonly used are 5, 10, 20 and 50 Euro denominations. Although \u20ac100, \u20ac200 and \u20ac500 notes are also available, they won\u2019t be accepted by many businesses.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Euro coins and notes are accepted anywhere in the Eurozone, regardless of the country they were issued in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wherever you change your cash, you should be wary about the <strong>fees<\/strong> and <strong>charges<\/strong> that are added. These are not always immediately obvious, so look carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best way to ensure a fair conversion deal is to understand the mid-market rate. This is the real <strong>exchange rate<\/strong> which you\u2019ll find on google and Xe.com, and should be used to compare the tourist rates on offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All major credit and debit cards are accepted in France. Hotels, stores, bars and restaurants in cities and major tourist areas will take cards happily. Occasionally you might find an outlet that will not accept <strong>Amex<\/strong>, so if this is your main card then it is worth asking before you commit to a purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smaller cafes, markets and bed &amp; breakfasts are likely to operate cash only. Carry some Euro currency on you just in case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you use a foreign registered credit or debit card in France you might come across Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). This means that you\u2019ll be asked if you want to be charged for your purchases in your home currency. Be wary of this option! The exchange rate used for the transaction will not be favourable, and additional charges can be disguised in this figure too. Always opt to pay in the local currency instead, which will mean your home bank perform the exchange at a fairer rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s worth letting your bank or card provider know you\u2019ll be travelling. Otherwise a sudden spike in overseas transactions might result in your card being blocked until your bank is able to contact you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you withdraw from an <strong>ATM<\/strong> abroad, you\u2019ll probably find that you are charged twice &#8211; once by your own bank and once by the ATM provider.
