These are longer and less frequent crossings than those from Dover, and can look more expensive. But if you are travelling from the West, North or Midlands they can offer advantages, especially if heading to Normandy, Brittany, the Loire Valley and the south and southwest of France &#8211; you can avoid the M25, long journeys across northern France and possibly an overnight hotel room en route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-however-there-are-other-options-dover-calais-dunkerque-dunkirk\">However there are other options &#8211;<br><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Dover &#8211; Calais\/Dunkerque (Dunkirk)<figure><a href=\"http:\/\/poferries.evyy.net\/c\/127126\/172860\/3038\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13867 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/dfdsferry.jpg\" alt=\"P&amp;O Cross-Channel Ferry\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/dfdsferry.jpg 300w, https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/dfdsferry-150x83.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>the shortest sea crossing at 90 minutes or less &#8211; (slightly longer to <strong>Dunkerque<\/strong>) &#8211; frequent daily crossings &#8211; motorway access on both sides of the Channel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>P &amp; O Ferries<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"DFDS France\" href=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/link\/dfds\/dfds-france\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">DFDS<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-newhaven-dieppe\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Newhaven\/Dieppe <\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>a slightly longer crossing (4 hours). <a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"DFDS Dieppe\" href=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/link\/dfds\/dfds-dieppe\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\"><strong>Dieppe<\/strong> <\/a>is an ideal gateway into Normandy and central France. <strong>Dieppe<\/strong> is the closest French port to <strong>Paris<\/strong> and the Alabaster Coast is famous for its beauty (see our<a title=\"Visit Dieppe\" href=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/ld-lines-drop-dieppe-service\/\"> article on Dieppe<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"DFDS Dieppe\" href=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/link\/dfds\/dfds-dieppe\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">DFDS<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-western-channel-portsmouth-plymouth\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Western Channel &#8211; Portsmouth\/Plymouth<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>longer (6-7 hours) (and more expensive) crossings but more facilities onboard and good for western France and Brittany and avoid the need to drive around London. (e.g. Calais to Biarritz is over 1000km!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-36600e61a04037aedd46e69f24fb11ac\" style=\"color:#6f0e2d\"><strong><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Brittany Ferries to Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/link\/brittany-ferries\/brittany-ferries-to-spain\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Brittany Ferries<\/a><\/strong><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/become.successfultogether.co.uk\/view.asp?ref=553752&amp;site=6792&amp;type=text&amp;tnb=10\"> for UK to France Portsmouth\/Plymouth to <strong><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Brittany Ferries SANTANDER\" href=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/link\/brittany-ferries\/brittany-ferries-santander\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Santander<\/a><\/strong>\/<a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Brittany Ferries BILBAO\" href=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/link\/brittany-ferries\/brittany-ferries-bilbao\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\"><strong>Bilbao<\/strong> <\/a>in NW Spain<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-for-eastern-or-central-france\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">For eastern or central France<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-especially-from-the-north-and-east-of-the-uk\"><strong>especially from the North and East of the UK:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hull &#8211; Zeebrugge<\/strong> with<a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"P&amp;O Ferries\" href=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/link\/ferries\/po-ferries\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\"> P&amp;O Ferries<\/a> &#8211; although Zeebrugge is in Belgium,with fast motorway links it is still only about 3.5 hours to <strong>Paris<\/strong> (306km), whereas Calais &#8211; Paris is 288km! and you avoid the M25 around London!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-channel-tunnel-le-shuttle\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Channel Tunnel<\/strong><\/span>\/ <em>Le Shuttle<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Frequent departures and no weather problems or delays &#8211; just 25 minutes in your own vehicle with no luggage restrictions, but can be more expensive than the ferry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Eurotunnel\" href=\"https:\/\/frenchduck.com\/latest\/link\/ferries\/eurotunnel\/\" data-shortcode=\"true\">Eurotunnel <\/a>(this is the tunnel train for vehicles) -Folkestone &#8211;
