Brouage Fort – Charentes

The Fort of Brouage (La place forte de Brouage) was originally constructed by a local nobleman as a port for the export of salt. Later it was enlarged to a Citadelle and fortified by Vauban in the 17th Century as a major port in the wars with the Huguenots .

The explorer Champlain was born here and did much to establish the French settlement in Canada.Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and lying between Rochefort and the Ile d’Oleron the site is largely unspoilt and is a haven for wildlife, especially with the adjacent salt marshes.
The Fort is in the commune of Hiers-Brouage (17 Charente Maritime, Poitou-Charentes). It is one of the sites in France most preferred by the French (according to France2 TV)monument preferre
