Graves Wine Weekend

On the weekend of 20 – 21 October 2018 the vineyards of the Graves wine area of Bordeaux  open their doors to the public Journées portes ouvertes for the Graves Wine Weekend.

Graves wine weekend posterFrom la Brède to Langon (33 Gironde, Nouvelle Aquitaine), along the banks of the river Garonne, the winemakers of the Graves offer wine lovers and the curious the opportunity to discover the world of the wines of Graves – red, dry whites, sweet whites and dessert wines. The local wine syndicate is in Podensac but the wineries are situated throughout the appellation.

Meet the winemakers, explore their knowledge and their passion in the area which first discovered the wines of Bordeaux! Wine tastings, entertainment for young and old, local foods and a festive weekend!

By Train TGV TGV to Bordeaux

The wine area of Graves gets its name from the soil. Graves are a mix of gravels, clay and sand carried down by the river. The Graves appellation is located just southwest of Bordeaux.

The red wines of Graves are recognizable by their garnet-red color, rich, attractive and more robust than the other Médoc wines.

Two third of Graves wines are white. Among the best white wines in Bordeaux, they are generally fresh, fruity and dry (some time medium-dry).

The appellation of “Graves supérieurs” is strictly reserved for sweet white wines.

The region which first established Bordeaux’s reputation, Graves wines were exported to England as early as the 12th century. The names is derived from ‘gravel’ and the best soils are gravel-rich, mixed with sand and occasionally clay. It is larger in areas than the Médoc but produces only half the amount of wine. The best wines were first classified in 1953 with this classification confirmed in 1959.
