<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We tend to connect Brass Bands with gritty northern towns in the UK, but by way of contrast the town of Limoux (11 Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon), south of Carcassonne. is hosting a Brass Band Festival (<em>Festival Limoux Cuivrée Spéciale</em>) from 29 April to 2 May 2010.</p>
<p><a href="http://frenchduck.com/latest/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/brass_limoux.jpg"><img src="http://frenchduck.com/latest/wp-content/plugins/image-shadow/cache/bb5c95176320329ffaa8a5b0c89deafb.jpg" alt="limoux brass festival poster" width="300" height="172" align="left" /></a>Amongst the bands appearing are the UK&#8217;s<strong> BBC Big Band</strong>, the <strong>French Band of the Republican Guard</strong> and a quintet of trumpets <em>&#8220;<strong>Les Trompettes de Lyon</strong>&#8220;</em>. There are also fringe events so the otherwise quiet town will be full of rich sound.</p>
<p>For more info see <a href="http://www.festivalcuivre.fr/index.html#" target="_blank">www.festivalcuivre.fr</a></p>
<p>Limoux is a good base for visiting the Pyrenees, Cathar country and the spectacular fortified medieval city of Carcassonne. Local wines include the still and sparkling white wines of Limoux (visit Antech), and furthe east you enter Corbieres country.</p>
<p><span style="color: #339966;"><em>Interesting that the French refer to Brass in this context as &#8220;cuivrée&#8221; which is more literally &#8220;coppered&#8221; &#8211; in general the term &#8220;brass&#8221; does not necessarily imply that the instrument is made from brass, but it belongs to a group of instruments where the sound is made by &#8220;lip vibration&#8221; &#8211; and of course includes the Saxaphone which is promarily made of wood. Presumably the same applies to the French use of the term &#8220;cuivrée&#8221;!</em></span></p>

The race starts in Rotterdam on 3 July 2010 and after a few days in Holland and Belgium the route takes in Champagne and Burgundy before heading for the Alps. Then southwest through the Côtes du Rhone before skirting the southern edge of the Massif Central, down through Languedoc-Roussillon before several gruelling days on the Pyrenees. One of the highlights will be on Saturday 24 July 2010 when there is an individual time trial from Place des Quinconces in Bordeaux up to Pauillac along the Route des Chateaux. In racing terms this is an important day as its is the penultimate day after 3 weeks on the road immediately before the Grand Finish in Paris on the Sunday 25 July 2010</p>
<p>From a spectator point of view it promises a good day out in the Medoc &#8211; as although you miss the momentary flash of 100+ professional cyclists zooming past, you get to see ech rider individually and can make a whole day of it with the race taking 2 hours or so to pass.</p>

There are already flights from Yorkshire Avignon, Bergerac,Chambery, La Rochelle, Nice, Paris and Toulouse.</p>
<p>This comes at the same time as Ryanair has also announced the cancelling of many flights from Stansted over this winter.</p>
<p>So, much will depend on when you want to fly and how much you are willing to pay &#8211; and as always with Ryanair make sure that you take into account the additional costs that will be added to the headline price &#8211; i.e for online booking, baggage, priority boarding etc. However, the new Ryanair destination airports are local to the named city &#8211; but some airports can be some distance from the named city- e.g. Paris Beauvais is 50 miles (80km) north of Paris and takes about an hour and 15 minutes by bus.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Although a rather small Languedoc village, Aniane has a world-wide reputation as the home of Mas de Daumas-Gassac where owner Aimé Guibert challenged the traditional winse bureaucracy by making top quality wines outside the very restrictive Appellattion Controllée system &#8211; and then the locals saw off an attempt by a large multinational to buy up a significant chunk of the local vineyards in order to make some bland, branded wine.</p>
<p>Importantly the village lies in the heart of the Languedoc vineyards about 40km North East of Montpellier (34 Herault. Languedoc)  Hence it makes an ideal focus for the  substantial <a href="http://www.salondesvinsdaniane.com" target="_blank">Aniane Wine Fair </a>(Salon des Vins) on the weekend of <strong>25-26 July 2009 &#8211; </strong>several dozen wine makers  from Aniane and surrounding villages (including Daumas Gassac) will be attending, including one of my favourties &#8211; the <a href="http://www.mas-seranne.com/" target="_blank">Mas de la Serranne.</a> where Isabelle &amp; Jean-Pierre Venture make some excellent Coteaux du Languedoc AC wines blending traditional Languedoc with  Rhône grape varietals which produce intense. but smooth, herby red wines.</p>

<p>Crossing the wild country of the Cevennes in southern France this line passes through 106 tunnels and over almost 1,300 bridges, including the impressive 41 arch Chamborigaud Viaduct.</p>
<blockquote><p>Easily reached by TGV from Paris, Nîmes is the starting point of this leisurely journey through the remote, wild country of the Cevennes. Though only 303km long, the line burrows through 106 tunnels and crosses almost 1,300 bridges, including some of the most impressive viaducts on French railways, such as the 28-arch edifice at Chapeauroux and the 41-arch near-semicircle of Chamborigaud Viaduct.</p>
<p>The southern plain of vineyards, Lombardy poplars and Aleppo pines gives way to a few miles of hilly post-industrial landscape with occasional traces of mining activity gradually being reclaimed by nature. The long climb into the Cevennes and the summit at La Bastide (1,023m above sea level) is flanked by woods and the occasional agricultural terrace etched into the hillside. Running across a plateau, the train offers panoramic views across hills stretching to the horizon. Lonely stations in the middle of nowhere make one wonder at the optimism of the railway’s builders. But perhaps the finest stretch is the long section of track built on a masonry ledge above the River Allier with glorious views along the sinuous valley.</p></blockquote>
<p>The journey takes about 5½ hours, yet fares start at  just £34 &#8211; the 300km route passes through Ales, Chamborigaud, Villefort, Chapeauroux, Langogne, Langeac, Brioude and Issoire.</p>

<blockquote><p>We are a small, high-quality vineyard and winery in the Roussillon, France&#8217;s most exciting wine region.Owned and operated by Jonathan Hesford and Rachel Treloar.<br />
As Vignerons Indépendants, we grow all the grapes, make the wine and bottle it at the domaine. We do not buy in fruit or wine from other sources.<br />
We also do all the work in the vineyards and winery ourselves and only employ outside help for pruning and picking.</p></blockquote>
<p>There are a significant number of British winemakers in France and this domaine is run by &#8221; a bloke from Yorkshire and a girl from New Zealand&#8221; , producing Cotes de Roussillon AC, Muscat de Rivesaltes and Vins de Pays d&#8217;Oc wines at Trouillas (66 Pyrenees Orientales) south of Perpignan. Open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for informal visitors, they also offer a &#8220;How wine is made&#8221; tour. <em>A friendly, informative and thoroughly enjoyable guided tour of the vineyards and winery followed by a tutored tasting of our wines. </em>.</p>
<p>If you cannot get to southern France you can visit their stand at the Bristol Wine Festival (10-12 July 2009) or purchase in the UK from <a href="http://www.lsfinewines.co.uk/acatalog/Domaine_Treloar.html" target="_blank">Leon Stolarski Fine Wines</a> or <a href="http://www.hcwines.co.uk" target="_blank">HC Wines.</a></p>
<p>For more info on the Britsol Wine &amp; Food Festival see <a href="http://www.bristolwineandfoodfair.co.uk/" target="_blank">www.bristolwineandfoodfair.co.uk &#8211; worth a visit to see a number of French and UK Vineyards, major importers and wine merchants plus a wealth of food products.<br />

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you are looking for a delightful way of exploring deepest France then cycling has to be an attractive and cheap option. Throughout France there is a network of &#8220;Green Routes&#8221; (<em>voies vertes</em>) <img class="alignright size-full wp-image-2052" title="voie verte alongside the Canal du Midi" src="http://frenchduck.com/latest/wp-content/plugins/image-shadow/cache/11b07b05b751e13b98dcd864393806e7.jpg" alt="voie verte alongside the Canal du Midi" width="276" height="207" />which can offer tranquil, flat(tish) pathways and minor roads which are ideal for walking and cycling etc and give you an opportunity to explore the depths of the French landscape and countryside away from the tyranny of the motor car. There is a national website with details of all the Voies Vertes at <a href="http://www.voies-vertes.info/" target="_blank">www.voies-vertes.info/</a> with a helpful location map (albeit in French). One route (of many) which looks interesting is the route from Beziers to Portiragnes-Plage in the Languedoc which runs for 15km alongside the Canal du Midi.<br />
There is a good and well-illustrated guide (in French)<a href="http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/2737331315?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=freduc-21&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1642&amp;creative=6746&amp;creativeASIN=2737331315">La France des voies vertes : Cyclistes,</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.fr/e/ir?t=freduc-21&amp;l=as2&amp;o=8&amp;a=2737331315" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></p>
<p>In English there is always the Lonley Planet Guide <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1741040442?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=allezvinsfrenchr&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=6738&amp;creativeASIN=1741040442">Cycling France (Cycling Guide)</a><img style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=allezvinsfrenchr&amp;l=as2&amp;o=2&amp;a=1741040442" border="0" alt="" width="1" height="1" />(new edition published July 2009) <em>&#8220;Here&#8217;s a sampling: in Paris you can take the bike paths along the Seine or all the way to Monet&#8217;s gardens in Giverny. The Loire Valley offers intimate excursions by sandstone villages, magnificent chateaux and scenic waterways. Take the tiny, winding roads of Provence to see perched villages and spectacular panoramas of the Cote d&#8217;Azur, or dip into Champagne for the terraced vineyards of Dom Perignon. For those up to the challenge, there&#8217;s the dramatic volcanic landscape of the Massif Central, with its steep climbs and sweeping descents. The Guide includes a chapter on the island of Corsica with its rugged coastal scenery and prehistoric sites.&#8221;</em></p>

<blockquote><p>There’s something very complete about our annual offer of wines from the Languedoc and Roussillon: with whites, rosés and reds, and wonderful fortified wines, the Vins Doux Naturels which are such a speciality of the region, there should be something for all tastes. Secondly, there are wines for every budget; at every level we believe these wines continue to offer terrific interest and value for money, at a time when finding such within the euro zone has become harder than ever. That’s why we continue to promote and recommend the wines of Languedoc-Roussillon with such enthusiasm. Now the region has really got its act together too, coming up with a unified marketing strategy under the jolly banner of “Sud de France”, and the creation of a new all-embracing Languedoc appellation, which stretches across the whole arc from east of Montpellier down to Perpignan.</p></blockquote>

<p>If you are a fan of Muscat wines then Perpignan (66 Pyrenees-Orientales, Languedoc-Roussillon) should be your destination from 31 January &#8211; 2 February 2009 with the <a href="http://www.rencontres-muscat.com/uk/index.php" target="_blank">Rencontres Mediterraneenes du Muscat</a> (Mediterranean Muscat&#8217;s Convention).</p>
<p>Open to the public, the event offers culinary and wine-tasting workshops and the opportunity to taste a range of Muscat wines and Vins Doux Naturels (fortified wines) including St Jean de Minervois, Lunel, Rivesaltes, Frontignan and Mireval in the Languedoc, Beaumes de Venise in Provence, Cap Corse in Corsica and Samos in Greece.</p>
<p>The Muscat grape in its various guises tends to produce wines with the most obviously &#8220;grapey&#8221; taste, and they are usually sweet or dessert wines , such as the local Muscat de Rivesaltes. However a dry style is produced in Alsace and some domaines in the Languedoc (under the Vin de Pays d&#8217;Oc label)</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-1590" title="st valentine village sign" src="http://frenchduck.com/latest/wp-content/plugins/image-shadow/cache/4a19705c220f55a3c76c8eea8f73779f.jpg" alt="st valentine village sign" width="185" height="146" />Despite the huge number of villages across France named after saints, there is only one which is named after St Valentine &#8211; at <strong>St Valentin</strong> (36 Indre, Centre), west of Issoudun and South West of Bourges.</p>
<p>Styling itself the &#8220;Villages for Lovers&#8221; (le village des Amoureux) the website at <a href="http://www.village-saint-valentin.com/" target="_blank">www.village-saint-valentin.com/</a> is very French and just a tad too pink for my liking. I an told that there is an annual festival on 14 February to celebrate their patron saint, but details were a little thin.</p>
<p>It appears that if there ever was a Saint Valentine, he was a very obscure saint, and any connection between him and a celebration of love is probably a very recent phenomenon, probably manufactured by florists, greeting card manufacturers and makers of pink ribbons!</p>
<p>The other option is to head down to Beaujolais and the village of<strong> St Amour</strong> (amour = love). The village is home to one of the Beaujolais wine crus, and is in fact the most northerly, which is probably better known for its voluptuousness rather than finesse! Again there it is unlikely that there ever was a saint called Amour, but is thought to be a derivation of Saint Amateur , a roman soldier who converted to Christianity and founded a local monastery. No obvious Valentine-inspired events here, which might make it a more attractive and less commercialised venue to take your paramour. Certainly the scenery is charming, even if the vines will look a little stark this time of year.</p>
<p>For more info on Beaujolais wines see <a href="http://www.beaujolais-wines.com/EN/Default.asp" target="_blank">www.beaujolais-wines.com</a></p>
<p>Or there is the <strong>Fete du Baiser</strong> (Festival of the Kiss) at Roquemaure near Avignon (30 Gard, Languedoc-Roussillon) although the name has now been changed to the &#8220;Lovers Festival&#8221; (Fete des Amoureux&#8221;) which takes place on the weekend of 14-15 February 2009.</p>
<blockquote><p>The relics of (a) Saint Valentine lay in Roquemaure since 1868. Every year, the weekend nearest February 14th, the town recreates the arrival of Saint Valentine’s relics and celebrates the love and romanticism this mythical Saint now symbolises.<br />
Roquemaure turns into the town of love legends, returning to its 19th century aspect with more than 800 traditionally costumed people, horses and carriages, store fronts decorated in 19th century fashion, an old post office selling souvenir postcards (valentine cards), a fountain of Lovers, a market with over 60 ancient trades, a bandstand and wooden merry-go-rounds. For the occasion, the streets are given the names of the most famous lovers in French literature. To the sound of oboes, bagpipes, drums, and shepherd’s pipes, folkloric dance groups animate the town, along with jugglers and acrobats. Lovers can hum the prettiest love songs played by the barrel organs in the streets of the ancient town. The relics are symbolically paraded on Sunday morning so that Saint Valentine blesses Roquemaure again. This completely free romantic festival was created 17 years ago.</p></blockquote>
<p>As an added bonus the winemakers of the local Appellation of <strong>Lirac AOC </strong>have chosen this weekend to celebrate their Festival of Vine Pruning! <em>&#8220;On the Sunday morning of Saint Valentine’s feast, seven carts loaded with vine shoots from the seven main vine varieties of the Lirac appellation accompany the procession of Saint Valentine’s relics in the streets of the ancient part of the village.&#8221;</em><br />

<p>In addition to an impressive series of concerts, there are also accompanying exhibitions (e.g. the History of the Guitar) and other events all contributing to an exciting and vibrant atmosphere across the city.</p>
<blockquote><p>This festival organised by the Théâtre de Nîmes showcases leading names from Spain as well as providing a platform for numerous new talents in the world of flamenco song, music and dance, perpetuating the tradition of this Andalusian art form in Southern France. While the majority of flamenco events in France tend to focus exclusively on budding Iberian talent, the Festival Flamenco de Nîmes retains strong links with the local flamenco scene, with its increasing numbers of talented artists.</p></blockquote>

The French property section seemed busy &#8211; lots of interest despite the euro and credit crunch!! Definitely worth a visit if you get the chance &#8211; 9-12 January 2009.</p>
<p>Most of the cross-channel ferry companies were in evidence, a sprinking of french food stalls and a good range of seminars and demonstrations, music, dancing (including the CanCan! and boules!</p>
<p>Perhaps the most surprising proposition was the idea of running your own British Supermarket in France! with <a href="http://www.thomasgreen.fr/" target="_blank">Thomas Green</a>. There are already 4 such franchises in France (in Paris, Lille, Strasbourg and Toulouse) selling delicacies such as Crumpets, Bovril and McVities&#8217;s Jamaica Ginger Cake!</p>
<p>A surprise was finding a stand for a rather nice hotel I stayed in at Servian near Pezenas &#8211; <a href="http://www.laroquemargaux.fr/" target="_blank">la Roque Margaux</a> &#8211; excellent rooms and food, superb service &#8211; and well-situated for visits to the Languedoc vineyards.</p>
<p>Another temptation was <a href="http://velovelo.co.uk/our-tour/" target="_blank">VeloVelo.co.uk</a> who offer &#8220;deliberately serene&#8221; cycling tours in Burgundy. And for a touch of nostalgia there was a display of classic Renault cars from the <a href="http://www.renaultclassiccarclub.com/" target="_blank">Renault Classic Car Club.</a></p>
<p>Just a small selection of the ideas on offer.</p>

Amongst the important remains that can still be seen today are the Roman amphitheatre, built at the end of the 1st century AD and considered to be the best-preserved Roman arena in France.<br />
The Maison Carrée, is one of the best preserved Roman temples anywhere. In recent years, the city has enjoyed a new-found energy and direction, enlisting the services of modern architects such as Norman Foster who designed the Carré d&#8217;art (1986), a museum of modern art.<br />
Nearby are the vineyards of the <a href="http://www.costieres-nimes.com" target="_blank">Costieres de Nimes AC</a> -</p>
<blockquote><p>The wines of Costières de Nîmes, in great southern tradition are vinified according to the principle of skilful blending of varieties. The proportions are defined by each winemaker in order to bring out the best expression of a terroir, to demonstrate the style of wine from that domaine or<br />
cellar but also to best express the profile of that vintage. The reds and rosés are made using Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Carignan and Cinsault.</p></blockquote>

<p>With lots of razzamataz, commercial sponsorship, scandal and sporting achievement, it is a spectacle well worth seeing &#8211; especially as it is free. However, the downside is that the Tour can cause major disruption with roads closed for hours, hordes of people and traffic &#8211; and all hotel rooms along the route booked.<br />
In 2009 the tour starts in Monaco on 4 July 2009, travels down the Mediterranean coast into Spain to Barcelona &#8211; then up through Andorra to the Pyrenees. With a skip to Central France the route heads east through northern Burgundy to Alsace, south the the Alpes and then heads for Paris and the final stage which finishes on the Champs Elysees on 26 July 2009.<br />

Trains a Grand Vitesse (TGVs) do run on on many major routes, but not all the line is a dedicated TGV track which permits speeds of up to 320km/hr  (200mph) &#8211; e.g. the TGV Atlantique to Bordeaux is only high speed track as far as Tours.</p>
<p>Several major extensions of the network include:-</p>
<p><strong>Tours to Bordeaux</strong> via Poitiers and Angouleme, bringing Bordeaux within 2 hours of Paris. Utlimately the high speed line will extend south to Bayonne and into Spain!</p>
<p><strong>Le Mans to Rennes</strong> in Brittany &#8211; bringing Brest within 3 hours of Paris!</p>
<p><strong>Bordeaux to Toulouse</strong> in South West France, reducing the travel time to 1 hour!</p>
<p><strong>Marseille to Nice</strong> will complete the line to Provence and the Côte d&#8217;Azur</p>
<p><strong>Montpellier to Perpignan</strong> and on to Barcelona in Spain!</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a great example of why domestic air travel in France becomes less and less viable with city centre to city centre times such as these in the offing &#8211; speedy and green!<br />
You can book any train journey to and within France including Eurostar, TGV and local lines through <a href="http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=40263&amp;a=1194892&amp;g=16635228" target="_blank">RailEurope</a><script type="text/javascript">var uri = 'http://impgb.tradedoubler.com/imp?type(js)g(16198420)a(1194892)' + new String (Math.random()).substring (2, 11); document.write('<sc'+'ript type="text/javascript" src="'+uri+'" charset=""></sc'+'ript>'); </script></p>

<p>The <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/the-50-best-railway-journeys-883074.html">Independent (2 Aug 08)</a> has another of its &#8220;50 Best&#8230;&#8221; series, this time on Railway Journeys &#8211; and includes 2 French ones.</p>
<p><strong>Clermont Ferrand-Beziers </strong></p>
<blockquote><p>The less well-used of the two lines from Clermont Ferrand through the Massif Central (the other goes to Nimes), this switchback route traverses some of the wildest country in France. Near St Flour the line crosses Eiffel&#8217;s Garabit Viaduct and follows the Lot and Tarn rivers to reach Millau and Norman Foster&#8217;s viaduct, the world&#8217;s highest road bridge.</p></blockquote>
<p>The journey takes 5 hours and costs about €50. It has to be said that the road journey is pretty spectacular too, whether you opt for the new autoroute A75 or quieter side roads as the route crosses the Auvergne and the Causses before descending to the Languedoc (see <a href="http://frenchduck.co.uk/travel/autoroutes.htm">www.frenchduck.co.uk/travel</a>)</p>
<p><strong>Eurostar London &#8211; Paris</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Okay, most of the scenery between London and Paris or Brussels isn&#8217;t going to inspire a modern-day Edward Thomas, but the pleasure of using the magnificently restored station at St Pancras and the blissful ease of Eurostar makes it a great experience. Treat yourself to first class and enjoy champagne and a pretty respectable meal at 186mph.</p></blockquote>
<p>Personally I would also recommend the route from <strong>Brive-la-Gaillarde to Montauban</strong> via Gourdon and Cahors &#8211; it cuts through the dramatic limestone landscapes and valleys of South West France offering unmatchable views of the countryside, the Lot River and the town of Cahors. Time: about 2 hrs, cost about €25.<br />

<p>A biodynamic wine is essentially an organic wine, avoiding pesticides and fertilisers in the vineyard and (as far as possible) any artifical chemicals in the winemaking process. But there is also an added &#8220;cosmic&#8221; dimension which determines key stages in the winemaking process from vine to bottle which are influenced by the phases of the moon and alignment of the planets.</p>
<p>Other examples of Biodynamic vineyards are <strong><a href="http://www.leflaive.fr/fr/" target="_blank">Domaine Leflaive</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.domaineleroy.com/GB_presentation.htm" target="_blank">Domaine Leroy</a></strong> in Burgundy, <a href="http://www.huet-echansonne.com/LaCulture/LaCulture_chap1.php?LangueSite=EN" target="_blank"><strong>Domaine Huet</strong></a> in Vouvray and <strong><a href="http://www.coulee-de-serrant.com/index-en.html" target="_blank">Coulée de Serrant</a> </strong>in the small Loire appellation of Savennieres.</p>
<p>Few are convinced that this approach is more than just a little bizarre, or that it produces distinctly better wines, although each of the established vineyards listed do have an excellent reputation.</p>
<p>Channel 4 will be showing a 6-part series about an Englishman&#8217;s quest to create a biodynamic wine in the Roussillon in the south of France starting on 4 September 2008 with <strong>Chateau Monty</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Top wine critic and author, Monty Waldin, has decided to put his money where his opinionated mouth is and pack it all in to make wine biodynamically in rural France. He has just over a year to turn 5.4 acres into top selling organic wine. Renovating an old cabin on his vineyard so he can babysit his vines 24/7, his only company will be his donkey and occasionally his high maintenance girlfriend Silvana when she jets in from Italy. Regarded by peers as a bit loopy because of his views about Biodynamics, and even as the enfant terrible of the wine world (he&#8217;s upset the establishment for his harsh criticisms of the wine industry), Monty&#8217;s nonetheless forged a successful career and written several award-winning books&#8230;But now he&#8217;s abandoning life behind the laptop for a new one making his own wine in the French Pyrenees.</p></blockquote>
<p>As always there is a book to accompany the series &#8211; <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1906032289?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=allezvinsfrenchr&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=6738&amp;creativeASIN=1906032289" target="_blank">Chateau Monty</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=allezvinsfrenchr&amp;l=as2&amp;o=2&amp;a=1906032289" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important" border="0" height="1" width="1" />and respected wine merchant <a href="http://adnams.co.uk/CellarAndKitchen/PagesPublic/ProductBrowse/product.aspx?group1=CELLAR&amp;group2=CASESWINE&amp;group3=*EMPTY&amp;group4=*EMPTY&amp;product=712459" target="_blank">Adnams</a> is stocking the wine &#8211; Monty&#8217;s Red 2007, Vin de Pays des Cotes Catalanes &#8211; <em>&#8220;The aromas of young, herby red fruits and a lively, juicy mouthful of charmingly rustic hedgrow flavours.&#8221;</em><br />

<p><strong>UPDATE:-</strong><br />
Jamie Goode, writing in the Sunday Express (17 Aug 08) adds: Think of <strong>biodynamic wines</strong> as &#8220;supercharged version of organic,&#8221; he says. Work in the vineyard is fitted in around the alignment of the moon and the planets, and growers claim it has improved the quality of their wine. Some of his recommendations include:-</p>
<p>• 2006 Chapoutier Organic Côtes du Rhône, France (£7.99, <a href="http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=1231&amp;a=[td_affiliate_id]&amp;g=53465&amp;url=http://www.johnlewis.com/ClickFrom/GENERIC/adtrack.asp?ID=36918&amp;sitename=TradeDoubler&amp;url=http://www.waitrosewine.com/230200961/Product.aspx" target="_blank">Waitrose</a>)<br />
• 2005 Bertie Collection Syrah, Minervois, France (£7.99, <a href="http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(1571)a(1194892)g(16698058)url(http://www.oddbins.com/products/productdetail.asp?ProductCode=78634)" target="_blank">Oddbins</a>)<br />
• 2004 Didier Barral Faugeres &#8220;Jadis&#8221;, France (£17.30, <a href="http://www.lescaves.co.uk" target="_blank">Les Caves de Pyrene</a>)</p>

<p><strong>Les Clos Perdus</strong> is a small winery founded by an unlikely combination of an Australian dancer and a Wiltshire farmer. Paul Old and Hugo Stewart estabished the vineyard in the village of <strong>Peyriac de Mer</strong> (34 Herault, Languedoc–Roussillon).</p>
<p>The name Les Clos Perdus (Lost Vineyards) reflects the discovery of select parcels of old vines, scattered throughout the hillsides.</p>
<blockquote><p>Many of the small vineyards had been disregarded by larger producers because of their isolation, their low cropping potential and their inability to be machine worked.</p>
<p>The selection of grape varieties on particular soils, in differing locations gives the wine the complexities we are looking for.</p>
<p>Our aim is to produce distinctive well balanced wines of the highest quality.</p>
<p>The wines produced are within the Corbieres appellation from various blends of Mourvédre, Carignan and Grenache and sometimes Syrah &#8211; big rich wines which retail from £8.00 a bottle upwards. They are clearly getting it right, with their wines featured on the wine lists of restaurants such as Gordon Ramsay at Claridges, Club Gascon and Tate Britain.<br />
Les Clos Perdus will be at the <a href="http://ukwinesonline.co.uk/wp/bristol-wine-and-food-festivalbristol-wine-and-food-festival/" target="_blank">Bristol Wine and Food Fair 11-13 July 2008</a></p></blockquote>

Set in the hinterland of the Languedoc, north west of Nimes and in the shadow of the Cevennes mountains, this was a stretch of the South we had not traversed before &#8211; gently rolling landscape, a little wild with patches of moorland, interspersed with vineyards. Puechredon is in reality a small hamlet surrounded by vines, now run by the energetic Cyril Cuche.<br />
There is little evidence of gleaming stainless steel here, with wines being vinified and matured in old-fashioned cement vats, lined with enamel or resin. Recently oak barrels have been introduced for maturing some of the special cuvées. It all had a slightly rustic feel &#8211; until we tasted the wines..<br />
With just one exception (the Sauvignon Blanc 2000) the wines were well-made, full of wonderful fruit, and clearly made with tremendous skill. The &#8220;terroir&#8221; seems to provide more mineral extract and fruit concenttration than the land nearer to the coast. The landscape around the domaine offers a variety of soils and aspects, so that Cyril can select the most appropriate plot for each grape variety.<br />
There is a charming tasting room (caveau) on the ground floor of the main house, which offers a fine welcome to visitors to the domaine.<br />

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://frenchduck.com/latest/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/tauch.jpg" title="tauch.jpg"><img src="http://frenchduck.com/latest/wp-content/plugins/image-shadow/cache/4573cb217bc9104f7d41738aef21957a.jpg" style="width: 128px; height: 96px" alt="MOnt Tauch winemakers" align="left" height="96" width="128" /></a>Deep in deepest southern France the wine cooperative of Mont Tauch is in the heart of the Fitou and southern Corbieres appellations &#8211; this is not, rugged country which can produce excellent rich reds, and some surprisingly fresh white wines. You have to take a detour off the main autoroutes and explore narrow country lanes to reach them, but the effort is well worthwhile. The scenery is impressive and the wines have never disappointed.</p>
<p>In many ways Mont Tauch is the antithesis of what we usually look for in a wine producer &#8211; firstly it is a co-operative, which can be very variable in ethos and quality; and secondly it is a big, and too often size can undermine quality and distinctiveness in the quest for more commercial (i.e. bland unoffensive) wines.</p>
<p>However Mont Tauch will open its new visitor centre in Languedoc at the end of July 2008. The centre, located at the winery in Tuchan (11 Aude, Languedoc) and</p>
<blockquote><p>aims to educate visitors about the cooperative and its wines, as well as about the surrounding Fitou appellation.</p>
<p>Visitors will be able to learn about a range of themes, including the diversity of vineyards and village life; soils and grape varieties; vinification; and sustainable agriculture and environment. Tutored tastings in both French and English will teach visitors about the cooperative&#8217;s range of wines, and tours of the winery and vineyards will also be available later in the year.</p>
<p>The centre includes a shop, which will sell up to 96 different wines made by the Mont Tauch cooperative, including rare vintages, premium products, vins doux naturels and bag-in-box wines. In addition, visitors will be able to purchase local produce and will have access to tourist information on the surrounding Fitou appellation.</p>
<p>Katie Jones, UK Sales &amp; Marketing Director at Mont Tauch, comments, &#8220;We decided to build a visitor centre and offer tours and tastings as wine tourism is something that we feel is very important and works well in other countries, but France has so far lagged behind. We think the new centre and shop will be a great way to attract more visitors to Mont Tauch and to introduce them to our wines and the unique way of life at the cooperative.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Mont Tauch also has a good informative website about the wines and the region &#8211; see <a href="http://www.mont-tauch.com/index.asp" target="_blank">www.mont-tauch.com</a></p>
<p>In the UK numerous merchants stock these wines &#8211; e.g.<a href="http://www.awin1.com/cread.php?awinmid=1546&amp;awinaffid=72440&amp;clickref=tauch&amp;p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majestic.co.uk%2Ffind%2Fkeyword-is-mont%2Btauch%2Fproduct-is-09352" onmouseout="self.status=''; return true;" onmouseover="self.status='http://www.majestic.co.uk/find/keyword-is-mont+tauch/product-is-09352'; return true;" target="_new">Majestic Wine</a>, who offer Fitou AC Les Hauts de Montluzy from £4.49 and the <a href="http://www.awin1.com/cread.php?awinmid=1546&amp;awinaffid=72440&amp;clickref=tauch&amp;p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.majestic.co.uk%2Ffind%2Fcategory-is-Wine%2Fcategory-is-France%2Fcategory-is-South%2Bof%2BFrance%2Fcategory-is-Fitou%2Fproduct-is-09354" onmouseout="self.status=''; return true;" onmouseover="self.status='http://www.majestic.co.uk/find/category-is-Wine/category-is-France/category-is-South+of+France/category-is-Fitou/product-is-09354'; return true;" target="_new">Fitou AC L&#8217;Exception</a> from £9.99.<em>&#8220;This characterful Fitou reveals rich, warming textures. Its lushness and power demands hearty food. &#8216;a powerful and seductive red with lovely fruit. Gutsy, well-balanced and complex.&#8217; (Steve Pryer, ES Magazine) &#8216;A serious demonstration of Haut-Fitou&#8217;s potential.&#8217; (Joanna Simon, The Sunday Times)&#8221;</em></p>
<p>Another very good co-operative in the region is at <strong>Embres-et-Castelmaure</strong> &#8211; about 12 miles south &#8211; making some expcetionally good Corbières AC wines &#8211; <a href="http://frenchduck.com/latest/index.php?s=castelmaure" target="_blank">see MORE</a> . In the area you can also explore the Cathar castles at Peyrepertouse and Queribus.</p>

<p>From 5 June &#8211; 14 June 2008 a firework and light show is planned to enhance the ancient Roman aqueduct with a nighttime concert under the title <strong>Lux Populi</strong> (theres a joke in the name!) &#8211; and as ever for the French the whole event is embellished with lyric poetry:</p>
<blockquote><p>Costumed with light, they play with flames and with fire, fly through the air, walk on the water and project their most secret thoughts on the landscape. Who are they? They go by the name of ‘Les Regardons&#8217;! This new species-half human and half flame-can transform space. In 2007, they put on an amazing light show at the Pont du Gard. They liked the place and they&#8217;re coming back again like migrant birds. Perhaps they have chosen to return to reproduce? In any case, their dance of love and fire, their successful or missed meetings and their magical or scientific experiments form the opening of a saga that traces the myths and fantasies of the Pont du Gard: ‘Lux Populi&#8217;. The season opens with the first episode entitled « The Flame of my dreams ». On with the show</p></blockquote>
<p>Well, whatever, it does promise to be quite a spectacle &#8211; a mix of a Son-et-Lumière, Circus and Music! From 10.30pm on 5,6,7,12,13 and 14 June 2008 &#8211; entry by ticket either in the stand or on the beach!<br />
