Goodness knows why the poor old duck should be implied to mean “a fabricated report” or “groundless rumour”. Of course the other problem with the term is that if you search for “duck” on the news, it is mainly about English batsmen’s scoring record - seems a shame that such a game bird which evokes great sentimentality from nature lovers, and is such a key staple of the diet of South West France has these connotations in English
